Shelby County Community Theatre is happy to announce our Summer Workshop Series. This year’s series consist of two main elements.

The first, lead by Shelbyville’s Amanda Simmons, is an 8-day program geared toward preparing young actors for auditions and performances in our Children’s Theatre production of “James and the Giant Peach.” This show opens September 5-7 and 12-14, is directed by Amanda Simmons, and is sponsored by American Founder’s Bank and Village Plaza Shopping Center. These workshops will be broken into two age groups, 7–10 and 11-18. Admission for one 4-day program is $80.

Amanda Simmons has a degree in theatre and a Master’s in Communication from Morehead State University. She is a board member of the Kentucky Theatre Association and Kentucky Alliance for Arts Education. Amanda is a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary and an Adjunct Instructor at Jefferson Community College. She has directed “The Wizard of Oz”, “Once on This Island Jr.”, and “Honk Jr.” at Clear Creek Elementary.

The second, focused on scene work (and not directly connected to any giant fruit) is lead by Louisville’s Tad Chitwood, and is geared toward intermediate and advanced actors, high school age through adult. These workshops will consist of four two-hour classes to be held on consecutive weekends. Participation in two classes is required, although all four may be attended. Admission for these sessions is $35 each.

Tad Chitwood has been Artistic Director for Louisville’s Necessary Theatre since 1994. With them, at the Martin Experimental Theatre at the Kentucky Center, he has performed in over 35 plays and directed 8. He has worked locally, as actor and director, with The Boat House Troupe, Pleiades Theatre, Finnegan Productions, Pet Fish Productions, The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, and Actor’s Theatre of Louisville. He is also a playwright and several of his works have been produced both locally and out of state. This spring he was commissioned by ATL to write a stage adaptation of a Jonathan Letham short story. He holds degrees from Centre College and the University of Louisville and has done extensive graduate work at Duke University, Queens College, The National Humanities Center, and Cambridge University. For over 20 years, he taught Drama and AP English in the Jefferson Co. Public School system and has taught at U of L and at Kentucky’s prestigious Governors’ Scholars Program. He has performed with New York’s Riverside Shakespeare Co. and played the good guy in an episode of “America’s Most Wanted.”
